UPDATE October 5, 2007

Looks like another round is starting. Check out this link - http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.jspa?threadID=2000445800&tstart=0&mod=1191644097837 to see what's new at eBay now....

The story? Several different people are reporting that they received an email from Vladuz, the hacker believed to be behind the events that occurred in September. (Said hacking never really having taken place, according to eBay.) These email recipients are stating that the emails apparently varied in wording, but the general message was the same - Vladuz IS in eBay's systems, the hacking did occur, and these recipients should uh cease and desist from the disparaging comments being made by them about Vladuz.

Along with the emails, these chosen few then discovered that their accounts were "Naru'd" - meaning they were designated in eBay's sytem as "Not A Registered User". With that came the closing of any stores they might have had open, the cancellation of any auctions they might have had running, and so forth.

Still later, quite quickly, in fact, access was restored, and at least one store I know of was back up and running with some inventory in it.

Speculation is starting to circulate that the host of problems PayPal has been experiencing lately might be connected with all of this as well.

According to an article at AuctionBytes.com, eBay confirmed that a "known fraudster had limited access to a very small number of eBay accounts on the eBay.com site". eBay carefully worded a response that indicated a hacker had gained access to some information, but didn't actually hack eBay.com.
